A flower's stem should be cut at a sharp angle at least 1 inch from its bottom, so that water is taken up easily when the flower is placed in water. An angled cut provides more area for water to be taken up, which means the flower can live longer. Cutting should be done under tepid running water to ensure no air enters the stem.
