  • Ques. A ball is dropped from a height of 5 m onto a sandy floor and penetrates the sand up to 10 cm before coming to rest . Find the retardation of the ball in sand assuming it to be uniform .

    After falling for 5 m, the speed of the ball is 0 + 2(g)(5) (using v2 = u2 + 2as) = 100 m/s. The ball is stopped after travelling for 0.1m.

    Therefore, again using v2 = u2 + 2as, we have - 0 = 1002 - 2a(0.1). So, a = 10000/0.2= 50000 m/s2.
