    The figure below shows the question you are talking about.



    Now let Rdenote the resistance between the points A and B. Since we are talking about the chain extending to infinity, removing or adding one loop won't make a difference to the total resistance between A and B. So we can represent the above figure by the following figure too.



    Hence, we can say that:


    R?  = equivalent resistance of the circuit shown above. The equivalent resistance of the second branch is R + R + R? since these three resistances (R, R and R? ) are in series.


    The net equivalent resistance therefore = R(2R+R?)/(R+2R+R?) = R?
