What is Retail Management?

Retail industry is one of the most exciting and dynamic industries in India and the world today. Shopping today has become an important part of ones day-to-day life and the retail side of it is becoming more and more complicated with increased competition for the customer's mind, heart and wallet share. Thus it has become an advanced science with different formats to meet customer's different needs and evolved insights into customer behavior providing the different companies with never before thought of competitive advantages.
In India with rapid urbanization there is a explosion in the number of Shopping centers, multi-stored malls and huge complexes that are emerging at each and every metros and other upcoming cities. This has made retail one of the largest sectors in India and a booming industry in the present century.

Retail management basically deals with the final interface between the customer and the product in the long value chain through which the product reaches the end customer from its manufactures. It hence deals with timely delivery of goods at a location that is convenient to the customer in a suitable format at an affordable and competitive price. This makes it a highly people intensive service industry. Retail can be classified into organized and unorganized sector depending on the level of investment, size, professionalism and scientific rigor that has gone into the establishment. Malls, Shopping centers, Retails chains etc are examples of organized retail, where as the ubiquitous “kirana” stores or mom'n'pop stores are examples of unorganized retail.

Today, Indian retail industry which accounts for over 10 percent of the country’s GDP (gross domestic product) and around eight percent of employment, is expected to grow at a compounded rate of 30 per cent over the next five years. As of 2010 only 8% of retail in India by value is in the organized sector but it is growing at a tremendous pace, out-pacing the economy. What this means is that , there are a lot of opportunities being created for scientific management of the different aspects of the retail industry and being a people intensive service sector, the demand for people is only going to rise making it an idea choice for making a successful career.
