What is Hotel Management?

With the recent boom in tourism industry there has been a huge growth of hotel industry in India. Having survived the scare of the recession in 2009 and now with the Commonwealth Games approaching fast, all sectors within the hospitality, including hotels, are expected to grow at an even faster rate. This has opened up a lot of opportunities in the hotel management roles across the country and there is a lot of scope for skilled individuals in this area. As far as tourism industry in India is concerned, it is attracting tourists from across the world and this definitely calls for quality hospitality.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, (Assocham) estimates that the in the near future (2011-12) there will be a job opportunities created for approximately 50,000 skilled professionals. Also around 70 hotels are likely to be commissioned in the next three years (2010), with each hotel will needing approximately 600 workers it is safe to say that the surge in demand is not a short term occurrence.

Like any other profession, the hotel management profession also requires a lot of domain specific skills for navigating the different challenges that it will hurl at you on a day to day basis. This is where a specific course on Hotel Management will be of great value. This is now recognized by the hotel industry, which has traditionally worked more on the apprentice model, and now a day’s most good hotel/hospitality jobs require a hotel management degree from a reputed institute as a prerequisite for applying for any job. Also since Hotels and hospitality fall under the service industry which is a very competitive and heavily customer facing job. Considering all this hotel management courses that are offered by various hotel management institutes in India prepare the students to face these challenges.

People who have natural flair for service and enjoy interacting with customer and have other hospitality related interests like cooking etc should definitely consider pursuing a career in the hotel management domain as once you make a mark, the rewards can be economically at par with the best across industries along with giving a good non monetary job satisfaction.
