Hotel Management Education - Different Programmes

With the growth in demand for trained professionals in the hotel management sector, there has been a lot of development of the hotel management education sector also. Today the prospective student has a lot of options across India for pursuing a course in Hotel Management.

Hotel management is usually a graduate course and candidates seeking admission to the hotel management courses in India need to pass their 12th standard examination with English as a subject. There are some colleges that admit only graduates (Oberoi). Even for in the colleges that admit undergrads, you will usually find a lot of people who, having done their bachelors in some other stream realise their true calling and, come and do hotel management courses and this is generally encouraged by a lot of colleges to increase diversity and provided richness to the discussions. The time duration of the courses offered by several institutes may vary from six months to three years.

There are multiple programmes that are run by the different colleges and brief details of the same are as follow

1. B.Sc. Hospitality and Hotel Administration:
This is a three-year programme offered jointly by the National Council for Hotel Management and the Indira Gandhi National Open University. The course equips the students with the requisite skills to efficiently discharge supervisory responsibilities in the Hospitality sector. We will discuss this in detail later

2. M.Sc. Hospitality Administration:
This course is available at the IHM - Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. The course duration is 2 year and the eligibility for the course is B.Sc in H.M. or 3 yr Diploma in HM.

3. Post Graduate Diploma in Accommodation Operation and Management:
The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to the graduates of any stream. The upper age limit for the admission to the course is 25 years, and the course is available at IHM- Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi (Pusa), Gwalior, Hyderabad, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram , and Faridabad (Food Craft Institutes).

4. Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Hospital Food Service:
The course duration is 1year and the course is open to the graduates with Science or Bachelor in Home Sc. The upper age limit for the course is 25 years and the course is available at IHM - Chennai, Delhi (Pusa) and Mumbai.

5. Craftsmanship Course in Food Production:
The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to 10th Class pass of 10+2. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at IHM - Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Goa, Gwalior Shimla, Delhi (Pusa), Thiruvananthapuram.

6. Craftsmanship Course in Food and Beverage Service:
The course duration is 24 weeks and the course is open to 10th Class pass of 10+2. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at IHM - Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Goa, Shimla.

7. Certificate Course in Hotel and Catering Management:
The course duration is 24 weeks and the course is open to those who have passed Class XII. The course is available at IHM - Mumbai, and Chennai.

8. Diploma in Food Production: The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to those who have passed Class XII. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at Food Craft Institutes- Ajmer, Chandigarh, Darjeeling, Faridabad, Gangtok, Jodhpur, Udaipur.

9. Diploma in Food and Beverage Service: The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to those who have passed Class XII. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at Food Craft Institutes- Ajmer, Chandigarh, Darjeeling, Faridabad, Gangtok, Jodhpur, Udaipur, IHM-Delhi.

10. Diploma in Front Office: The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to those who have passed Class XII. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at Food Craft Institutes- Ajmer, Chandigarh, Darjeeling, Faridabad, Gangtok, Jodhpur, Udaipur.

11. Diploma in House Keeping: The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to those who have passed Class XII. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at Food Craft InstitutesAjmer, Chandigarh, Faridabad, Jodhpur, Udaipur.

12. Diploma in Bakery and Confectionery: The course duration is 18 months and the course is open to those who have passed Class XII. The upper age limit for the course is 22 year and the course is available at Food Craft Institute- Chandigarh, IHM- Delhi (Pusa).

Of these B.Sc. Hospitality and Hotel Administration is the most popular and most comprehensive.
